Why Apply to Head Start New Haven?

Head Start provides FREE 6-hour early childhood programs for low-income New Haven families in the following New Haven Public Schools: 

  • Benjamin Jepson Multi-Age School
  • Dr. Mayo Early Childhood School
  • Fair Haven School
  • John Martinez Sea & Sky STEM School
  • Lincoln-Bassett Community School
  • Truman School
  • Additional community locations also participate in the program.

Parents of 3 and 4 year olds are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility

Head Start requires you meet income eligibility driven by the federal poverty guidelines. Additional early childhood program options exist if you do not qualify for Head Start.

2. Apply

Fill out application form completely. All information will be kept confidential. 

3. Submit Additional Info

Submit additional information with your application (see below). 

4. Get Placed

Get placed in a school or community location or be referred for additional Early Childhood Programs.

What to submit with your Application:

1. Proof of Age

  • Child’s Birth Certificate OR
  • Legal Custody/Guardianship Papers

2. Proof of Address

  • Current utility bill (Gas, Electric, Phone, Cable) in your name
  • Residency Affadavit Form

3. Proof of Income

  • 2 months of Current & Consecutive pay stubs OR W-2 or 1040 Tax Return
  • Budget Statement from the CT Department of Social Services or Social Security Office or Child Enforcement Bureau
  • Notarized Statement indicating Parent is unemployed

4. Physical (within one year-to-date)

  • CT Department of Education Early Childhood Health Assessment Record
  • Anemia and lead level test results
  • TB assessment
  • Immunizations records
  • Seasonal flu vaccination
  • Health insurance card

5. Dental Exam (within 6-months-to-date)

  • Dental Exam Record
